SUMMARY:Bike Pt Chev Mystery Bike Hike
DESCRIPTION:Did you know you can ride for miles in most directions from Pt Chev\, almost entirely free from traffic? Join us for the first of what we hope will be many local bike adventures\, exploring off-road connected bike paths in our hood and beyond! \nWe’ll gather in the town square outside the library\, then head off\, on an out-and-back ride of ~14km. It’s about half an hour in each direction\, so expect to be on the move for around an hour\, not counting stops to explore. \nOn our return to Pt Chev we’ll hang out at Nomad for a chat. Feel free to stick around! \n• Given the length of this initial ride\, it’s more suitable for adults and teens. Once we’ve tested the concept\, we’re planning future rides more suitable for families with children. (If you do want to ride along this time\, there’s a natural turnaround point that would make for a shorter 5km route.) \n• This ride is entirely off-road and on quiet streets\, with a couple of road crossings. \n• Drop us a line below to let us know you’re coming\, so we can plan ahead. You can also contact us at bike.ptchev@gmail.com \n• Make sure your bike’s in good working order before the day – please check your tires and brakes especially! \n• If we need to reschedule for any reason\, we’ll post an update on the chalkboard in the square opposite the library. \nAlso\, thanks to the Albert-Eden Local Board for their support for Bike Burb activities!

SUMMARY:Light the Night - Tamaki Drive
DESCRIPTION:After August’s ride got rained off\, we’re trying again. It will be spring and daylight saving is only a couple of weeks away.\nPut lights and reflectors on your bike (and yourself) and come for a ride along the shared path from Mission Bay to St Heliers and back(with a detour).\nMeet 6.30pm at the clock tower.\nAfterwards we can either have a bite in Mission Bay or head into town.\nWe want it to be a bike party\, showing people that you don’t have to take your car if you’re going out on a Saturday evening. It’s also a good chance to see what people are using to make themselves more visible at night and talk to others about their lighting.\nThe essentials are:\nYou need a bike and the attitude that you are going to enjoy yourself. Lights are essential. Everything else is optional.\nOptional stuff:\nA Bluetooth speaker and your favourite tunes\nA bike lit up like a Christmas tree\nAn outrageous costume\nHow it works:\nWe meet up at the start location and get organised and wait for any stragglers.\nHop on our bikes and follow the leader towards town\, turn around at the Tamaki Yacht Club then head to St Heliers and ride back to the start. From there\, those will kids can head home and the rest of us do what we feel like. \nFAQ\nWhat does it cost? Zip\, zilch\, nada\, nothing.\nHow long will it take? We will be riding slowly but the aim is to be back at the start by 8.00 pm at the latest.\nCan I leave any time? Yes\, head home whenever you feel like it.\nIs anything happening after? Nothing is organised\, but you can meet up with others going your way and carry on the party all the way home.\nCan I bring friends? Of course\, everyone is welcome.\nCan I bring my E-bike? Of course E-bikes are welcome.\nWhat’s the minimum age? There’s no minimum age but kids should be able confidently ride a bike the full distance. You can carry younger ones on a bike seat it trailer. You are responsible for your children\, this is not a drop and leave event.\nWill it be safe? Experienced riders will be at the front and back. The entire trail is off road and on sealed paths. Only two driveways to cross (twice).\nThere will be a small first aid kit available and also someone who can do basic bike repairs.\nWho is organising this and who is paying for it? The event is organised by a group of volunteers from Bike Eastern Suburbs\, and Bike East Auckland.\nWhat if it rains? If we’re going to cancel\, we will post on the Event page and Bike Eastern Suburbs Facebook page before 4pm on the day.\nRules: We try and keep rules to a minimum.\n1. Give way to all other path users.\n2. No alcohol – we want it kid friendly.\n3. Keep left and please don’t overtake the lead rider.\n4. There are a couple of driveways to cross in Mission Bay. You are responsible for looking out for cars crossing.\n5. Have fun\nNote: This is free\, volunteer run by the community. We accept no liability for anything outside our control. SUMMARY:Art Week 2024 on te Ara i Whiti\, the Lightpath
DESCRIPTION:In an algorithm-meets-art collaboration\, artist Shannon Novak and iion have programmed Te Ara I Whiti – The Lightpath to deliver happiness for Art Week. \nThis innovative artwork\, commissioned by Auckland Council\, is called Random Acts. It will shine in movement\, colour and light from 7.30pm to 6.30am every day from 4 to 13 October. \nShannon Novak says it began with the Art Week theme of ‘happiness’. His practice focuses on growing positive mental health outcomes for LGBTQI+ communities which aligns well with the Art Week theme. \n“For this commission\, I wanted to connect with the wider population – beyond LGBTQI+ communities. We explored how the essence of random acts of kindness could be expressed through this interactive lightwork. The algorithm sees the palette of lighting lift as people pass and connect with each other\,” he says. \nHayley Wolters of Auckland Council Public Art encourages you to experience Random Acts on Te Ara I Whiti – The Lightpath on your way to and from the city centre for Art Week from 4 until 13 October. \n“As someone moves along the Lightpath\, the lights change from magenta to a colourful display in response to their movement\, and as people pass each other the colours merge and intensify expressing positivity as people connect\,” she says. \nSee the full Art Week line-up here: heartofthecity.co.nz/artweek
