SUMMARY:Northcote to Devonport Return - a guided ride
DESCRIPTION:This guided bike ride – brought to you by the friendly folk of your local Bike Kaipatiki bike burb – is aimed at people who are already confident at riding and who are looking for a relaxed ride with good company.\nMost of the route will be on shared paths or cycleways\, with the majority of the road sections on quieter back streets.\nDate: Sunday 18th March 8am – 11am\nDuration: Starting from the Northcote Library at 8am\, and returning approximately 3 hours later to the same place\, with a coffee/ice-cream stop at Devonport.\nRoute: We will ride out from Ernie Mays Street to find the Akoranga Drive shared path. We will follow the path along Esmonde Road before crossing into Eldon Street. From here\, we follow the green route in to Devonport – with stunning views of the city and harbour as we cross through parks on our way down the peninsula.\nWhat to know: Riders should be comfortable riding the distance/time described above and keeping up a reasonable yet relaxed pace with others around them.\nWhat to bring: You will need a road-legal bicycle\, ready to go (tires pumped\, brakes working)\, helmet\, money for coffee/ice-cream (optional)\, water\, sunscreen\, and appropriate clothing (keeping in mind it is Auckland).

SUMMARY:Smales Farm to Albany Social Ride
DESCRIPTION:The Bike Kaipatiki team invites you on a social bike ride to explore the less frequently travelled upper reaches of Kaipatiki! \nThis year\, we may have special guests along\, in the form of cousins Matthieu and Quentin from France – they’re cycling around the globe to raise awareness of the harm plastic does to the environment and to encourage us to reduce\, reuse and recycle. We hope they’ll be able to give the group more information at either Altura or Columbus. To find out more about their project see: \nhttps://www.facebook.com/cycletorecycleplastic/\nhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqQEmwpkCgIN2TlaDyTKMmQ \nStarting from and returning to Columbus Coffee at Smales Farm\, our route will take in:\n– A close-up of some remarkable architecture\n– Weird sculptures in a wetlands renovation\n– Bush scenes that will make you think you’re in back-blocks NZ\n– A strange subterranean tunnel more reminiscent of a Hobbit movie\n– A stunning lake\n– High performance sport in action\n– Bucolic scenes you surely wouldn’t expect in the heart of a metropolis. \nCome and join us on a voyage of discovery into parts of the Shore you perhaps never knew existed\, or at least probably haven’t seen from the saddle of a bike. \nStarting at 8am from Smales (where you may want to drive to with your bike on a rack)\, we’ll make our way north using as many off-road paths as we can. Unfortunately\, of necessity there will be some parts of the route where we’re on the road and sharing with cars\, so you need to be comfortable about riding on the road. There will also be some hills\, but we’ve kept the gradients as easy as possible. \nYou’ll be in a group with a ride leader and Tail-End-Charlie who will ensure we all keep together as safely as possible. If you lack a bit of fitness or road confidence – don’t worry. We’ll all stay together to maximise the enjoyment. This isn’t a race\, and there will be plenty of stops to look at the attractions and catch a breather. \nFrom Smales Farm\, we’ll ride north for an hour or so\, arriving at Altura Cafe in Douglas Alexander Parade where the team from Bike Albany are welcome to join us for a coffee. After suitable refreshments we’ll return to Smales via the same route. No problems if some participants would like to return home independently from Altura. \nHope you can join us – will be good to get a ride in before winter starts to bite. And the weather? The odd shower won’t put us off\, but if it’s thoroughly miserable we’ll cancel. Keep an eye on the Bike Kaipatiki Facebook page for details. See you at Smales from 7.30am for a pre-ride coffee to make a start at 8am. \nThis ride is part of Ecofest North.

SUMMARY:Pedal & Pizza - Flat White Ride
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a classic two-hour Sunday ride along some great cycle trails in West Auckland! We’ll have a coffee stop along the way and serve homemade wood-fired pizza at the EcoMatters Bike Hub afterwards. For a map of the route\, see here. \nWe will start at the Packing Shed Cafe and do the Flat White Ride clockwise\, with a coffee stop at The Waterview Coffee Project before finishing at the EcoMatters Bike Hub in New Lynn. The ride will be 21km\, with the option to meet us in Waterview if you prefer doing a shorter ride. \nThis loop combines cycle paths\, shared paths and a little bit of on-road riding\, so you will need to be a confident rider and take responsibility for your own safety. All bikes and e-bikes welcome! \nIf you’re bringing a car\, best is to park it at the Bike Hub in New Lynn\, take the train to Sunnyvale and ride the Oratia Stream Shared Path (pink route) to The Packing Shed. Or join Brent and cycle from New Lynn to Oratia\, leaving the Bike Hub at 8.45am (NB: this is a hilly ride with no dedicated cycle lanes\, suitable for experienced cyclists). \nMeet at 9.15am at the Packing Shed Cafe\, 99 Parrs Cross Road\, Oratia. \nThis event is funded by the Whau Local Board.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on a classic two-hour Sunday ride along some great cycle trails in West Auckland! We’ll have a coffee stop along the way and serve homemade wood-fired pizza at the EcoMatters Bike Hub afterwards. For a map of the route\, see here.\nWe will start at the Packing Shed Cafe and do the Flat White Ride clockwise\, with a coffee stop at The Waterview Coffee Project before finishing at the EcoMatters Bike Hub in New Lynn. SUMMARY:Big Cock Ride for Blue September
DESCRIPTION:When people hear Carl Wells creates Strava Art (i.e. by riding a route that draws a picture on the Strava map)\, a fairly common reaction is ‘haha\, you should draw a giant penis’. LOL. \nOne such conversation was overheard by Carl’s friend Tim\, a fellow musician in the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. In a stroke (or two) of brilliance\, he commissioned Carl on the spot to design what they’re calling the Big Cock Ride. \nTim survived a prostate cancer scare a few years back\, and ever since he’s been putting on an excellent annual charity in support of Blue September. His annual event at the Red Rabbit Coffee Co is awesome: a live Blues Brothers band\, delicious food and beer\, with 100% of funds collected going to the charity. And this year – for the first time – it’ll be preceded by the Big Cock Ride. \nJoin the first annual Schlong-a-thon! Grab your bicycle and GPS\, and join Carl in drawing the biggest cock’n’balls ever to disgrace the city of Auckland – and all in a good cause. Come together to be part of something huge! \nWhere\, when and how to join in \nAny rider ambitious enough to go the full length should be ready to ride from the Red Rabbit at 1pm on Saturday 29 September 2018.  You’ll arrive back at the cafe by around 3pm\, just as the band and festivities begin. \nTo sign up and get involved\, join the event pages on Strava and Facebook.  \nThe ride is about 30k and is recommended as suiting riders who use clip-in pedals and are comfortable riding in traffic. \nEven if you can’t make it on the day\, please consider supporting Blue September by donating to support this impressive effort! \nQuestions? Contact Carl. \nNote from Carl: for artistic purposes\, the actual route will differ very slightly from image above\, as there is no straight line route through Grey Lynn. But\, when using a GPS computer\, if you pause it mid-ride and resume at a different location\, the software (on Strava) draws a straight line between the two points. Hence the two straight lines in the ‘art’.  Between marking those points\, we conveniently ride up the Nelson St protected bike lane\, Lightpath\, and the Northwestern Cycleway. On the return route\, after completing the ‘nuts’\, we come back on the NW cycleway again\, and down the Grafton Gully. Tricks of the trade!
