SUMMARY:Bikes n Beers Biketober! He Rā Maumahara | Remembering the NZ Land Wars
DESCRIPTION:As people on bikes\, we are intimately familiar with the geography of our city\, but what about it’s history?  Did you know Auckland’s Great South Road was built to make it easier for colonial forces to invade the Waikato?\n \n\nThis month we’ll be acknowledging He Rā Maumahara\, our National Day of Remembrance of the New Zealand Land Wars\, commemorated on October 28th. This is also the date of the 1835 signing of He Whakaputanga- our nation’s Declaration of Independence.  Did you know we had one?\n\n \n\nTHE PLANBring along a story to share about the history of a place in Tāmaki Makaurau. This could be the story behind a place name\, an important feature of the landscape like a maunga (mountain) or awa (river)\, or about how a particular suburb came to exist. Did you know the suburb of Howick was a Fencibles settlement\, built as a military defense post?\n \nHOW WE ROLL\n\nJoin us for an after-work craft ale or two! Bikes & Beers is Bike Auckland’s monthly catch up for people who like bikes. Come along for a natter with bikey types from all sorts of obscure backgrounds!\n \n\nIf you are a Bike Auckland member\, you are entitled to a free bevvy at this event! How cool is that???\n \nNo RSVP required — just turn up!

DESCRIPTION:EcoMatters is thrilled to host the 5th Street Art Bike Challenge this year\, where Aucklanders get out and about by bike to find street art and go in to win $1000 worth of prizes. \nThe Challenge is held in April to make the most of end-of-summer cycling weather\, as well as Easter and the school holidays. \nAll you do is cycle to one of the city’s colourful street art spots; take a pic of you and your bike\, then just load it up online and press submit to enter. Then pedal on to the next arty spot or take a break and do more another day. \nEvery pic you submit puts you in the draw to win end-of-challenge prizes plus weekly spot prizes all around Tāmaki Makaurau\, and you can enter as many times as you like. This is a great way for people of all ages to enjoy some fresh air while experiencing Auckland’s outdoor art scene by bike. \nMore details\, visit the website: https://www.ecomatters.org.nz/on-bikes/street-art-bike-challenge/ \nPeople will be able to enter the challenge via an online form where entry images and contact details can be uploaded from March 22 onwards.
