SUMMARY:Light the Night - Tamaki Drive
DESCRIPTION:After August’s ride got rained off\, we’re trying again. It will be spring and daylight saving is only a couple of weeks away.\nPut lights and reflectors on your bike (and yourself) and come for a ride along the shared path from Mission Bay to St Heliers and back(with a detour).\nMeet 6.30pm at the clock tower.\nAfterwards we can either have a bite in Mission Bay or head into town.\nWe want it to be a bike party\, showing people that you don’t have to take your car if you’re going out on a Saturday evening. It’s also a good chance to see what people are using to make themselves more visible at night and talk to others about their lighting.\nThe essentials are:\nYou need a bike and the attitude that you are going to enjoy yourself. Lights are essential. Everything else is optional.\nOptional stuff:\nA Bluetooth speaker and your favourite tunes\nA bike lit up like a Christmas tree\nAn outrageous costume\nHow it works:\nWe meet up at the start location and get organised and wait for any stragglers.\nHop on our bikes and follow the leader towards town\, turn around at the Tamaki Yacht Club then head to St Heliers and ride back to the start. From there\, those will kids can head home and the rest of us do what we feel like. \nFAQ\nWhat does it cost? Zip\, zilch\, nada\, nothing.\nHow long will it take? We will be riding slowly but the aim is to be back at the start by 8.00 pm at the latest.\nCan I leave any time? Yes\, head home whenever you feel like it.\nIs anything happening after? Nothing is organised\, but you can meet up with others going your way and carry on the party all the way home.\nCan I bring friends? Of course\, everyone is welcome.\nCan I bring my E-bike? Of course E-bikes are welcome.\nWhat’s the minimum age? There’s no minimum age but kids should be able confidently ride a bike the full distance. You can carry younger ones on a bike seat it trailer. You are responsible for your children\, this is not a drop and leave event.\nWill it be safe? Experienced riders will be at the front and back. The entire trail is off road and on sealed paths. Only two driveways to cross (twice).\nThere will be a small first aid kit available and also someone who can do basic bike repairs.\nWho is organising this and who is paying for it? The event is organised by a group of volunteers from Bike Eastern Suburbs\, and Bike East Auckland.\nWhat if it rains? If we’re going to cancel\, we will post on the Event page and Bike Eastern Suburbs Facebook page before 4pm on the day.\nRules: We try and keep rules to a minimum.\n1. Give way to all other path users.\n2. No alcohol – we want it kid friendly.\n3. Keep left and please don’t overtake the lead rider.\n4. There are a couple of driveways to cross in Mission Bay. You are responsible for looking out for cars crossing.\n5. Have fun\nNote: This is free\, volunteer run by the community. We accept no liability for anything outside our control. You are responsible for your own safety of your bike and of those around you. All we are doing is providing a start point\, a time and a destination. By turning up you accept these conditions. SUMMARY:Learn to pilot a tandem
DESCRIPTION:Learn to ride a tandem bike with people who are blind or have low vision. \nTandem pilots bring the joy of cycling to people who are blind or have low vision\, who may otherwise be excluded from cycling. Tandems benefit people with other disabilities too. For people who can’t cycle alone\, a tandem is a great solution. \nWhat is tandem piloting for people who are blind or have low vision?\nThe vision impaired rider or ‘stoker’ sits at the back of the tandem and provides muscle power. The pilot steers the tandem and rides in close communication with the stoker. \nAbout the session\nCome along to Silo Park where we’ll be using the safe space of the basketball courts for your 30-minute lesson on how to pilot a tandem. After your lesson\, you will have the opportunity for free practice on the tandem with the experienced stokers who are available to help. \nYou’ll also have the chance to meet a high performance tandem pairing who represent Aotearoa internationally at Para cycling competitions. \nBikes will be provided. Bring your helmet if you have one\, or use one of our spares. \nWhat can you do with your new tandem piloting skills?\nOnce trained\, you will be able to use your skills as a pilot rider with people in your own life\, or take up volunteer opportunities such as providing tandem piloting for vision impaired riders on group rides around our region\, recreationally or competitively in the Para sport space. \nHelp spread the word about this event\nUse this Learn to Pilot a Tandem event poster to share this event with your network.

This is also the date of the 1835 signing of He Whakaputanga- our nation’s Declaration of Independence.  Did you know we had one?\n\n \n\nTHE PLANBring along a story to share about the history of a place in Tāmaki Makaurau. This could be the story behind a place name\, an important feature of the landscape like a maunga (mountain) or awa (river)\, or about how a particular suburb came to exist. Did you know the suburb of Howick was a Fencibles settlement\, built as a military defense post?\n \nHOW WE ROLL\n\nJoin us for an after-work craft ale or two! Bikes & Beers is Bike Auckland’s monthly catch up for people who like bikes. Come along for a natter with bikey types from all sorts of obscure backgrounds!\n \n\nIf you are a Bike Auckland member\, you are entitled to a free bevvy at this event! Take the first hurdle and have a go on our E-Bike to see if this mode of transport is for you!\nMany who have taken the opportunity to try our e-bike had not been on a bike for a years or have no time to do the research or feel that it is far from what they would imagine doing!\nAll of them returned with a big smile on their faces\, having had a super fun time giving it a go and many considered making the switch from car to e-bike!\nTry for yourself!

DESCRIPTION:A GROUP RIDE TO CELEBRATE PT CHEVALIER’S NEW LANESSATURDAY 12 APRIL 2025 \nMeet at Phyllis Reserve\, Mt Albert at 10am for a fun ride along the Waterview shared path & fabulous new Pt Chev cycle lanes to Coyle Park. \nEnjoy a free hot choccy (bring your own snacks!) and friendly chat with other riders before returning (10km return). \nRSVP to register your interest. \nKids welcome\, but you must be confident of their ability to ride the distance and ride safely. SUMMARY:Light the Night 2025 - #1
DESCRIPTION:Daylight saving is over. Time to dig out your bike lights and make sure you are seen.Dress up your bike and yourself and come for a ride along the shared path from Mission Bay to St Heliers and back.Meet 6.30pm at the clock tower. To make it a bit longer\, we will start by riding towards the Tamaki Yacht Club and turning around in the car park there.Afterwards we can either have a bite in Mission Bay or head into town.We want it to be a bike party\, showing people that you don’t have to take your car if you’re going out on a Saturday evening. It’s also a good chance to see what people are using to make themselves more visible at night and talk to others about their lighting.\nThe essentials are:\nYou need a bike and the attitude that you are going to enjoy yourself. Lights are essential. Everything else is optional.\nOptional stuff:\nA Bluetooth speaker and your favourite tunesA bike lit up like a Christmas treeAn outrageous costume\nHow it works:\nWe meet up at the start location and get organised and wait for any stragglers.Hop on our bikes and follow the leader towards town\, turn around at the Tamaki Yacht Club then head to St Heliers and ride back to the start. From there\, those with kids can head home and the rest of us do what we feel like.\n \nFAQ\nWhat does it cost? Zip\, zilch\, nada\, nothing.How long will it take? We will be riding slowly but the aim is to be back at the start by 8.00 pm at the latest.Can I leave any time? Yes\, head home whenever you feel like it.Is anything happening after? Nothing is organised\, but you can meet up with others going your way and carry on the party all the way home.Can I bring friends? Of course\, everyone is welcome.Can I bring my E-bike? Of course E-bikes are welcome.What’s the minimum age? There’s no minimum age but kids should be able confidently ride a bike the full distance. You can carry younger ones on a bike seat. You are responsible for your children\, this is not a drop and leave event.Will it be safe? Experienced riders will be at the front and back. The entire trail is off road and on sealed paths. Only two driveways to cross. There will be a small first aid kit available and also someone who can do basic bike repairs.Who is organising this and who is paying for it? The event is organised by a group of volunteers from Bike Eastern Suburbs\, and Bike East Auckland.What if it rains? If we’re going to cancel\, we will post on the Event page and Bike Eastern Suburbs Facebook page at around 4pm on the day.\nRules:\nWe try and keep rules to a minimum.1. Give way to all other path users.2. No alcohol – we want it kid friendly.3. Keep left and please don’t overtake the lead rider.4. There are a couple of driveways to cross in Mission Bay. You are responsible for looking out for cars crossing.5. Have fun\nNote: This is free\, volunteer run by the community. We accept no liability for anything outside our control. You are responsible for your own safety of your bike and of those around you. All we are doing is providing a start point\, a time and a destination. By turning up you accept these conditions.
