SUMMARY:Drop-in Bike Skills & Maintenance: Henderson
DESCRIPTION:Our Beginner Bike and Maintenance Drop-in Sessions are back for summer with sessions in Henderson\, the Cloud\, Mangere and Takapuna.\nThis session will be happening at the Henderson Service Centre – enter from Smythe Rd (follow signs for ‘Waitakere Central’)\, follow the driveway past the council buildings and Civic Centre\, and park in the carpark at the end. Look out for our instructor team and a trailer load of bikes as they will be there ready to go.\nAt the session there will be separate ‘learn to ride’ instruction for anyone who has never ridden a bike\, while other participants will practice skills such as changing gears\, braking\, bike control\, signalling and more.\nA mechanic will also be there to answer any maintenance questions including how to remove a wheel\, how to adjust brakes and how to best look after a bike.\nThe drop-in session is a flexible format where you can take part in cycle skills lessons\, bike maintenance\, or a little of both. Unable to stay for the full time? No sweat\, stay for as little or as long as you like. It is also a good opportunity to come along and ask one of our regional coordinators for more info on riding locally.\nSo\, if you are keen to master the art of riding a bike or want to learn to fix a flat… pop in.\nBikes are available on a first-come\, first-served basis. We don’t want you to miss a moment of the fun\, so it is best to be there early.\nNo need to book for these sessions.

DESCRIPTION:The Bike Kaipatiki team invites you on a social bike ride to explore the less frequently travelled upper reaches of Kaipatiki! \nThis year\, we may have special guests along\, in the form of cousins Matthieu and Quentin from France – they’re cycling around the globe to raise awareness of the harm plastic does to the environment and to encourage us to reduce\, reuse and recycle. We hope they’ll be able to give the group more information at either Altura or Columbus. To find out more about their project see: \nhttps://www.facebook.com/cycletorecycleplastic/\nhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqQEmwpkCgIN2TlaDyTKMmQ \nStarting from and returning to Columbus Coffee at Smales Farm\, our route will take in:\n– A close-up of some remarkable architecture\n– Weird sculptures in a wetlands renovation\n– Bush scenes that will make you think you’re in back-blocks NZ\n– A strange subterranean tunnel more reminiscent of a Hobbit movie\n– A stunning lake\n– High performance sport in action\n– Bucolic scenes you surely wouldn’t expect in the heart of a metropolis. \nCome and join us on a voyage of discovery into parts of the Shore you perhaps never knew existed\, or at least probably haven’t seen from the saddle of a bike. \nStarting at 8am from Smales (where you may want to drive to with your bike on a rack)\, we’ll make our way north using as many off-road paths as we can. Unfortunately\, of necessity there will be some parts of the route where we’re on the road and sharing with cars\, so you need to be comfortable about riding on the road. There will also be some hills\, but we’ve kept the gradients as easy as possible. \nYou’ll be in a group with a ride leader and Tail-End-Charlie who will ensure we all keep together as safely as possible. If you lack a bit of fitness or road confidence – don’t worry. We’ll all stay together to maximise the enjoyment. This isn’t a race\, and there will be plenty of stops to look at the attractions and catch a breather. \nFrom Smales Farm\, we’ll ride north for an hour or so\, arriving at Altura Cafe in Douglas Alexander Parade where the team from Bike Albany are welcome to join us for a coffee. After suitable refreshments we’ll return to Smales via the same route. No problems if some participants would like to return home independently from Altura. \nHope you can join us – will be good to get a ride in before winter starts to bite. And the weather? The odd shower won’t put us off\, but if it’s thoroughly miserable we’ll cancel. Keep an eye on the Bike Kaipatiki Facebook page for details. See you at Smales from 7.30am for a pre-ride coffee to make a start at 8am. \nThis ride is part of Ecofest North.

Whether your child is starting on a balance bike or making the transition to pedals\, the team is there to help. \nIf your child doesn’t yet have a bike but is keen to give it a go\, there will be bikes available on a limited basis. \nSessions are weather dependent and run on a drop-in basis. Unable to stay for the full time? No sweat\, stay for as little or as long as you like. It is also a good opportunity to come along and ask one of our regional coordinators for more info on riding locally. \nSo\, if you are keen to master the art of riding a bike or want to learn to fix a flat… pop in. \nBikes are available on a first-come\, first-served basis. Safe for all ages and abilities.\n* 9am – 3pm swing by the container to decorate your bike with free ribbons and lights\n* 6.30pm gather at the container to get ready to ride\n* 7-9pm a guided night ride along the route! \nMORE ABOUT THE POP-UP BIKE HUB \nThe Bike Kaipatiki Pop-up Bike Hub is in the Northcote Town Centre. \nThere will be something happening at the Hub between 10am and 4pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week from the 11th of September to the end of October. \nThe hub will be active most Saturdays between 9am and 3pm (though we don’t plan to be open on the Saturday of Labour Weekend\, October 22nd). \n\nMost days\, we will be taking donated bikes to repair and gift out into the community\, offering free safety checks and basic maintenance\, information and more.
