SUMMARY:Art Week 2024 on te Ara i Whiti\, the Lightpath
DESCRIPTION:In an algorithm-meets-art collaboration\, artist Shannon Novak and iion have programmed Te Ara I Whiti – The Lightpath to deliver happiness for Art Week. \nThis innovative artwork\, commissioned by Auckland Council\, is called Random Acts. It will shine in movement\, colour and light from 7.30pm to 6.30am every day from 4 to 13 October. \nShannon Novak says it began with the Art Week theme of ‘happiness’. His practice focuses on growing positive mental health outcomes for LGBTQI+ communities which aligns well with the Art Week theme. \n“For this commission\, I wanted to connect with the wider population – beyond LGBTQI+ communities. We explored how the essence of random acts of kindness could be expressed through this interactive lightwork. The algorithm sees the palette of lighting lift as people pass and connect with each other\,” he says. \nHayley Wolters of Auckland Council Public Art encourages you to experience Random Acts on Te Ara I Whiti – The Lightpath on your way to and from the city centre for Art Week from 4 until 13 October. \n“As someone moves along the Lightpath\, the lights change from magenta to a colourful display in response to their movement\, and as people pass each other the colours merge and intensify expressing positivity as people connect\,” she says. \nSee the full Art Week line-up here: heartofthecity.co.nz/artweek

We may not have time for everything to dry\, but you will have something you can take home. \nMade from recycled cardboard and foam\, the heads are custom made for each bike and can be quickly fitted and removed. \nThe workshop is at Sunhill Garden Centre Markets\, St Johns Rd from 9.00 to 12.00. \nWe will be using sharp knives and very sticky glue so it’s a workshop for bigger kids and adults (12+). Smaller kids can come but need to be one on one supervised by an adult. The venue is small so numbers are strictly limited. \nThis is our first time running the event\, if it’s successful we could have more sessions so let us know. \nThe venue is in the Sunhill Market so there will be food and drinks you can purchase on site or you can bring your own drinks and snacks. \nEntry is free thanks to sponsorship by Bike Auckland but koha towards costs would be appreciated. \nWhat do I need to bring?\nA bike\nDrinks\, snacks (if needed)\nA sense of fun \n  \nRSVP required as numbers are strictly limited!

SUMMARY:Help us decorate K' Road's bike parking for Pride Month - Yarn for Pride
DESCRIPTION:Every year we decorate the bike parking along Karangahape Road in celebration of our LGBTQI+ community\, the queer history of K Rd\, and the growing cycle network. Will you help us put some decorations up? \nWe’ll be meeting at Zeki’s (K’ Road) on Sunday January the 18th for a chat and a beverage before continuing on to put up the decorations. You’re welcome to bring crochet\, knitting\, or other crafts to work on for while we are there. \nOnce we’re hydrated (and probably caffeinated)\, we will begin to decorate the bike parking along Karangahape Road in celebration of Pride Month. This is a legal activity; we have an event permit. The decorations are pre-made crocheted and knitted scarves. We will sew them on to the bike parking. This is known as yarnbombing. \nBeginners are welcome – we will teach you. There will be scissors\, yarn\, and yarn needles available for you and your friends to use. \nPlease wear sunblock\, bring water\, and stay hydrated. If you have made some decorations for the bike parking please bring them. \nOf course\, please stay home if you are feeling unwell. \nIf you have made some decorations but are unable to put them up yourself\, you are welcome to\n– bring them to us at this coffee meetup\, or\n– send or drop them to the Electric Bike Team (29 East Street\, Auckland Central\, Auckland 1010)\, or\n– send or drop them off to the Auckland Pride Office (281 Karangahape Road\, Auckland Central\, Auckland 1010)\nAnd we will make sure they get put up. \n‘Yarn for Pride’ is an annual event run by Rainbow Riders Tāmaki Makaurau and is part of the 2026 Auckland Pride Festival. See the full festival programme at aucklandpride.org.nz.
