Bike Auckland’s Fiáin d’Leafy was in great company for Road Safety Week when they were shortlisted for the Road Safety Hero Award. Fiáin and six other remarkable heroes made the shortlist, announced at the start of Road Safety Week 2025.
The top honour goes to Mila Smith de Zeeuw, a Year 13 student from the Coromandel. Mila was named the 2025 Hero for her committed leadership in road safety, including intervening as an effective first responder when a cyclist was struck by a car.
Without hesitation, Mila blocked the road and provided first aid until emergency services arrived. She also coordinated with the local fire brigade and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to ensure full emergency support.
Mila is a member of Fire and Emergency New Zealand. She is also the leader of her school’s SADD (Students Against Dangerous Driving) committee. Her work includes spearheading initiatives that bring police and Fire and Emergency into her school to raise awareness about road safety.
Mila, you have really impressed us with your leadership and genuine impact on improving road safety. We look forward to seeing where you go with your remarkable drive, commitment and skills. Congratulations on your award.
