Come and celebrate Te Ara Ki Uta Ki Kai!

Have you been looking for an excuse to come and experience the new stretch of path in the east – the completed first stage of Te Ara ki Uta ki Tai, the first part of what will soon be a grand bicycle (and pedestrian) highway running from Glen Innes all the way into the CBD?

Good news! Bike Eastern Suburbs is hosting a family day this Sunday 12 February. Gather at Columbus Cafe in Glen Innes at 10am.

After a coffee, the fun begins with a ride and walk along the first stage of the path. At the top of the path at around 11.00, there’s a get-together (with prizes, to be drawn by Councillor Desley Simpson!) at the top of that section. You’ll also have a chance to ask questions and share your thoughts about the project – Auckland Transport folk have very kindly come along to listen to our feedback on Stage 1 and the plans for future stages.

This will be followed by an optional tour around Stage 2, so you can see it from all sides and get more information about where it’ll go. This is the part of the path that will run through the hidden jewel that is the Pourewa Valley – we’ll travel at a gentle pace with lots of cafe stops, and will pause along the way at some stunning view-points to look out over the native bush and trace where Stage 2 will travel down the valley.

This free event is oragnised by volunteers from Bike Eastern Suburbs, Friends of Pourewa Valley, and the Meadowbank & St Johns Residents Association.

Sounds ideal for a Sunday morning outing, eh? Check out the poster below, and see the Bike Eastern Suburbs page for more details.

PS You can arrive by train to Glen Innes Station – it’s always free to bring your bikes on the train, and much easier on weekends! Trains head EAST from Britomart half-hourly, with good options at 8.59 and 9.29.  (Return trains from Glen Innes leave half-hourly at .26 and .56 past the hour.)

Allow yourself a wee bit of extra time for ticketing, getting through the gate, and boarding with your bike. Hot tip: the carriage with the bike symbol on the outside (usually the middle carriage) has easy roll-on access for bikes.
