A lot of walking/cycling bridge projects are currently being constructed around Auckland, and we thought you might be interested in getting a heads up on what is going on:
We have blogged before about this huge yellow overbridge that will span the motorway south of Westgate, near Massey North – allowing the community on both sides of the motorway to reach each other more easily by foot or bicycle, without having to go use the nearby motorway interchange.
It will also provide better access to the Westgate Shopping Centre area, and for those with a longer ride in mind, towards the Northwestern Cycleway / Don Buck Road cycle lanes.
The bridge’s basic structure is now almost completed – one last span is missing, but as you can see in the attached photo, progress is quite visible, and should be finished ~ early next year.
Dilworth Overbridge over SH1 / Southern Rail Line
Located just south of the Newmarket Viaduct, this new bridge is probably one of the better-known new overbridges on the network.
Again, it is almost complete, with one section of one approach ramp missing, and should be completed soon. The old bridge is already gone, so access is interrupted for a while though (opening expected in 1-2 weeks).
At the right, some photos from NZTA: The first one showing the new bridge next to the old before that got removed, while the second one shows a cross-section of the new bridge with the sweeping truss (those trains just barely fit!).
The third shows cranes lifting off the old overbridge, which is being cut apart – with the two pieces going as “recycled” overbridges for locations in Matakana and Kumeu.
Jacob’s Ladder Bridge over SH1
This probably isn’t on your radar as a cycling overbridge – because there’s no ramps at the northern end, just an elevator and stairs. However, there is a ramp from Beaumont Street on the southern side that is cycleable, and NZTA have repeatedly clarified that cyclists are welcome to use the bridge. One hopes that in the long run, we can add a ramp on the northern side as well.
After long construction delays, this bridge is now intended to be opened in 2 weeks.
