A full scale model for the middle unit of our new electric trains is about to be built and shipped out to Auckland. It will have a few optional layouts for carrying cycles to help the public give feedback on how the final layout should be configured. Auckland Transport are consulting us now about these options.
It’s great having input, but it’s not a ‘blue skies’ exercise. The carriages are quite narrow, so hanging bikes into the passenger space is impractical. Also, like all suburban trains worldwide, the top priority will be to maximise passenger seating for peak hour loadings. This will include fold-up seats in the bike parking area, and we need to avoid floor fittings which could cause tripping or injuries.
We’d love to get some pointers from you on the bike fittings and layouts for the mock-up unit. We’re also keen to gauge demand for improved bike parking at stations, as we see it as being complementary to carrying bikes on trains.
