Aren’t we glad we got a condition of consent…

Bikeway Bridge Over GNR…that requires the Northwestern Cycleway to stay open for the duration of the causeway widening project on SH16, except for short closures that are absolutely unavoidable?

This condition was one of CAA’s requests successfully achieved during the Board of Inquiry process:

Temporary Traffic Management Condition 6:

The SSTMPs shall include measures developed in consultation with Auckland Transport to, as far as practicable, enable continued public walking and cycling passage along the existing Northwestern Cycleway (between Te Atatu Interchange and St Lukes Interchange) and along Great North Road and the public walkway along Oakley Creek, with any interruptions being as short as feasible.

Now that the closure of the old cycleway section west of the Point Chevalier Interchange has also closed the bus lane there (to provide for the moved shared path), the public pressure would otherwise be enormous – and in olden times, they would have just shut down the cycleway “for a few months” while they were working in the area.

We sincerely regret the delays for bus passengers (sorry, but we can’t ride against the flow in a bus lane, and our bikes can’t swim Oakley Creek!). And the delays will only get worse when the bus shoulder lanes from Point Chevalier to Te Atatu also get closed along the motorway proper in the near future (not related to the cycleway) – but hey, NZTA can easily get the bus lanes back: There are still 2 normal lanes on the on-ramp, and 3 normal lanes on the motorway itself left! Wouldn’t that be a great committment to public transport by NZTA?
